Charlotte Cottage Garden
Charlotte, VT
This large garden is composed of many "rooms" that encircle the house to create a journey. Each room has its own feel, but over all they are relaxed and soften the many hardscape features. Guests approaching the house are greeted by swaths of daylilies, lilacs, hydrangeas and rugosa rose hedges. The front entry is shady and cool and irregular flagstone is planted with mosses and ferns. Along the path you pass through a formal sundial garden to a gazebo, then through a planted wildflower meadow, down a river birch alle, through the vegetable garden and fruit orchard, and arrive at the outdoor kitchen and patio. A long hedge of roses encloses the entire area and separates it from the hay field beyond. The garden was designed for meandering, and the client enjoys gardening and entertaining in its many spaces.
